Methods for chronic neural recording in the telencephalon of freely behaving fish.

چکیده
We have adapted for use in fish several of the procedures employed for recording single neuron activity in freely behaving rodents. Developing a method for single unit chronic recording in freely behaving fish was motivated by a need for a comparison across taxa of telencephalic neural activity evoked during spatial navigation by animals of their environments. However, the procedures outlined here can be modified easily for underwater recording from most aquatic species and from other brain areas. Under anesthesia, bundles of stereotrodes or tetrodes were implanted into the dorsolateral region of the goldfish or cichlid telencephalon. An infrared light emitting diode (LED) was also fixed to the fish's head at the time of surgery. After recovery from anesthesia, fish were allowed to swim freely within a large aquarium. Single unit activity was analyzed and correlated with stimulus conditions, behavior, and the location and movement of the LED recorded by a camera tracking system. The value of this technique is demonstrated by providing the first evidence in fish for navigation-related neural firing, including "place cells" that display location-specific discharge.

Large-scale neural ensemble recording in the brains of freely behaving mice.
With the availability of sophisticated genetic techniques, the mouse is a valuable mammalian model to study the molecular and cellular basis of cognitive behaviors. However, the small size of mice makes it difficult for a systematic investigation of activity patterns of neural networks in vivo. Here we report the development and construction of a high-density ensemble recording array with up to...

Electrophysiological recordings from ensembles of neurons in behaving mice are a central tool in the study of neural circuits. Despite the widespread use of chronic electrophysiology, the precise positioning of recording electrodes required for high-quality recordings remains a challenge, especially in behaving mice. The complexity of available drive mechanisms, combined with restrictions on im...

The use of chronically implanted electrodes for neural recordings in small, freely behaving animals poses several unique technical challenges. Because of the need for an extremely lightweight apparatus, chronic recording technology has been limited to manually operated microdrives, despite the advantage of motorized manipulators for positioning electrodes. Here we describe a motorized, miniatur...
